A video of 26-year-old Nathan Washam allegedly showed the officer using racist slurs during a video game live stream. BART launched an investigation into the video, leading to Washam's resignation on Monday.
San Ramon Police Chief Denton Carlson is in the process of hiring lateral transfers. He discovered that Washam was one of his candidates. Carlson viewed the video and decided to disqualify the former BART officer, but, surprisingly, Washam had already undergone a clean background check.
"No, we didn’t have any red flags," Carlson told KCBS Radio. "We have the capability, because of the size of our agency, to really pay close attention for every single candidate that's coming through our process, but we didn’t have any indication that this behavior was there or this thought process existed prior to what we saw yesterday."
Carlson said racist behavior has no place in his profession. "It's things like this that continue to erode the public trust, so it's frustrating that it continues to happen in our profession that’s for sure," he said.
