Santa Clara County health officials asked for more COVID-19 vaccines as the county topped 100,000 positive cases Friday.
Sunday also marks the one-year anniversary since the county confirmed its first case.
“It’s quite the milestone, which none of us I think ever wanted to see,” said Santa Clara County COVID-19 Testing and Vaccine Officer Dr. Marty Fenstersheib.
Fenstersheib said it’s been a year of heartache.
There have been over 100,000 cases and 1,300 related deaths.
“And, more importantly, to note is more than 80 percent of the deaths are in persons over 65 years of age,” Fenstersheib told KCBS Radio.
This week, the county began vaccinating people over the age of 65, but he said they need a lot more doses to reach their goal of protecting 85 percent of their population by August 1.
“The more vaccine that we receive into the county, the more persons we can vaccinate,” Fenstersheib noted.
Health officials are also working to support equitable access among people of color.
Currently, the county is administering 6,600 vaccines per week.
Over 60,000 residents have been vaccinated so far.
