The new office will assign case managers to people who did not have access to behavioral health services, or people making transitions in care from one place to another, according to a news release from Mayor Breed's office.

This is a part of the 2019 Mental Health SF Legislation that focuses on helping people experiencing homelessness. The goal is to give people access to resources and services to prevent them from falling back into a cycle of crisis, the release said.

Breed partnered with Supervisor Hillary Ronen and then-Supervisor Matt Haney to craft the legislation. This is part of the city's plan to provide services for those in need to help "improve the conditions on the streets," according to the mayor's office.

"We are working to fix a system that simply has not worked well for so many of those we see struggling in our city every day," Breed said in the release. "This requires both new resources but also reforming how we deliver services around mental health and substance use disorders."

The State of Emergency in the tenderloin helped expedite the hiring process for the staff needed to open the Office of Coordinated Care, the release said.
