Fifteen people were injured in a roaring apartment fire in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood early Saturday.

The flames engulfed a six-story Sierra Madre apartment building at 6:30 a.m. on the 400 block of Leavenworth St., leaving approximately 60 residents displaced.

After 90 minutes of strenuous work, the San Francisco Fire Department was able to contain the blaze, leading people and pets to safety down a tall ladder along the side of the building. Twenty residents were rescued by firefighters.

Lt. Jonathan Baxter told the San Francisco Chronicle that 15 people were treated for injuries inside an emergency Fire Department bus and are in stable condition. Among the injured was a San Francisco Police officer, who was treated at a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The Red Cross helped to locate adequate shelter for the 60 displaced residents.

By 8:15 a.m. the fire was contained within the apartment building and had not spread to neighboring properties.

The cause was not immediately known.
