As San Francisco enters Transit Month, Mayor London Breed is recommending that residents start taking public transportation again, an industry that took a hard hit during the height of the pandemic.

COVID-19 infection rates have been dropping in the Bay Area, prompting city officials to encourage residents to get back on buses and trains.

A plan to restore full service on MUNI is currently underway, however, some challenges including maintenance issues and operator count are making this process difficult.

"We’re trying to get to that point," Breed told KCBS Radio on Wednesday. "We’re dealing with maintenance issues which we’re investing in heavily, but also making sure that we have a sufficient number of operators to operate these buses, and that people are trained adequately for our trains as well as our buses. We want people to be safe."

The path back to pre-COVID-19 ridership is to make the service more reliable, Breed said, promising that the buses will come when they are scheduled to come, there will be enough room for people to comfortably ride and they will be clean.

"Right now our focus is reliability and we’re hoping that we’ll get to full service sometime soon, but we can’t necessarily say when that’s going to be at this time," she said.
