The boulder near the top of Bernal Heights park has a long and storied history – and a new coat of paint first spotted on Monday makes a strong statement about the conflict taking place in Ukraine.

"This rock is really a gathering point for the whole neighborhood and various social movements going on," one passerby told KCBS Radio. "It really is a place where people come together."

It's a cultural flashpoint in the Bay Area.

From messages of peace and love years ago, the words "Black Lives Matter" just months ago and now the current blue and gold colors of Ukraine and the phrase "Stop Putin." Inscriptions on the back – written in Russian – reportedly translate to "Russian ship – go f-k yourself!" and "Glory Ukraine," per SFGATE.

The latter is a now famous line uttered by a group of Ukrainian border guards at Zmiinyi (Snake) Island.
