SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Thursday to dedicate a new affordable housing complex in the Mission.

It's the type of facility that the city desperately needs, as more people have been struggling with housing amidst the pandemic.

The more than 140 new homes have been designed for families earning 40-60% of the area's median income, and the building boasts a rooftop farm and free internet.

Part of the funding for the project was provided by the federal government, according to Breed.

"And let me tell you, we wouldn't be able to be here today if it wasn't for the advocacy of the people of this community," she said.

One of the reasons this project is so needed in the area is that there has been some concern that the Mission's Latinx population is being pushed out by the same kind of gentrification that changed the Fillmore.

Between 2000 and 2019, 9,000 Latinx residents left the Mission.

"One of the things that would happen when we would build housing in these neighborhoods, the people who lived here had to go through an extensive lottery process with thousands of applicants," she said.

These new housing projects, as well as a system of neighborhood choice, have helped to slow the exodus.

But this new facility is just the beginning. More than 500 additional units are in the works for the neighborhood.
