Health officials in Solano County have expanded COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to all residents ages 50 and older, a first in the Bay Area.
The decision, made over the weekend, was triggered in an effort to fill unused vaccination appointment slots, KCBS Radio has confirmed.
Solano County’s health officer, Dr. Bela Matyas, told the San Francisco Chronicle that individual counties "have the freedom to advance the state’s vaccine rollout as long as they’re vaccinating groups included in the guidelines."
All available slots are now filled with the change.
Just Monday, California opened up vaccination eligibility to anyone ages 16-64 with certain high-risk medical conditions, disabilities or illnesses. People living in congregate spaces like homeless shelters and prisons, along with transportation workers were also included on the list.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
