A 21-year-old Sonoma State University student died Monday afternoon after he was hit by a car near the Rohnert Park campus.
Ronald Gaither, 19, hit the student with his 2015 Ford Fusion, Rohnert Park police said.
The student died at the scene, and his name has not been released.
Witnesses told officers that the car left the area after the collision, but police said the driver called authorities "within minute" to say he had been in a collision. Officers found Gaither on Roman Dr., and said he cooperated with investigators.
Police said it appeared the student wasn’t in a crosswalk when he stepped off the center median on East Cotati, and Gaither wasn’t in position to stop his car. Investigators are looking into whether Gaither or the student were inattentive or distracted, as well as how fast Gaither’s car was going during the collision.
Gaither was evaluated at a nearby hospital, and police said it didn’t appear drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision.
