Caltrain's new South San Francisco station opening is delayed again.
The transit agency announced last week that the station, which first began construction in November 2017 after months of delays to relocate utilities, is now set to open this November.
Construction on the project was delayed from April 2018 to September 2019. In October 2019, officials targeted opening the station in November 2020. This March, the agency then targeted a summer opening.
Caltrain said track conditions, low productivity and the COVID-19 pandemic all contributed to the delays.
"The significant risks are now behind us and the contractor productivity level has increased resulting in a projected station opening milestone in approximately five months,” Caltrain said in a release.
The project will now cost $96.6 million, up from an initial $71.6 million. The San Mateo County Transportation Authority is funding $23 million of the new budget, while South San Francisco is footing an additional $2 million.
Caltrain said the new station will increase system capacity, with a 700-foot center boarding platform. There will be direct underground tunnel access from the city’s east and west sides.
In the meantime, riders can continue to access the temporary station at South San Francisco.
