An 87-year-old deacon from a Stockton church has died and a 33-year-old woman staying with him is fighting for her life after both were shot in his home over the weekend.

According to reporting by CBS 13, the pastor of Harvest of Blessing Church, Willie Pruitt, said Deacon Robert had opened his home to the woman he called Sister Bailey, to help her avoid becoming homeless.

Both attended the church.

"They both were regular attendants and I love both of them," said Pruitt. "I tell the people as much as we would want to suggest, just don’t judge, just don’t speculate because we weren't there, and we don’t know what happened."

Neighbors reported hearing shots the night of the incident. According to Stockton police, the shooting took place at around 2 a.m.

Stockton police report they have no suspect information in this case.
