Stockton officers shot and killed a man who charged at them while armed with a firearm outside of their police station on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at the parking lot of the Stockton Police Department Operation Building on 22 East Market St, Police Chief Eric Jones said in a news conference Wednesday night.
Jones briefed that the man arrived in the parking lot "armed with a handgun" and, while walking, "continually" fired the gun "it appears mostly up in the air but also could have fired toward some of the vehicles and other things in this front lot."

After walking around with the firearm "for a bit," and then putting himself on the ground, the suspect suddenly "sprinted" towards officers while still armed with the handgun. That prompted officers to open fire on the man, and he was declared dead at the scene. Six officers responded to the incident and "five fired shots at the man after ordering him to drop the gun," according to Jones.
Authorities said in a press release that all officers are "ok."
Jones said it’s "too early to determine" the suspect's motive.
"I have not seen anything like this. I’ve been here nearly 30 years with Stockton PD, nearly 10 years as police chief, and for somebody to come right into the police department like this and fire the weapon and charge right at the officers with the weapon is very unique," he said.
A multi-agency critical incident investigation into the shooting is underway. No other details were available.
Officials said they would release more information as it becomes available.
