Up to four feet of snow could fall in the Lake Tahoe area by early next week, which is excellent for resorts and snow sport fanatics.
"Snow levels are bound to drop anywhere between 25 and 3,000 feet as they come over the crest, really good to set us up as we move towards the holiday season here in Lake Tahoe," Kevin Cooper with Cooper Marketing and Media in South Lake Tahoe told KCBS Radio.
He anticipated that phones are already ringing off the hook and websites are getting a lot of traffic as people make lodging reservations and book lessons. He also expects the resorts to open up more terrain.
"That's just great for skiers and riders, that's more terrain to access and the mountain operations seem to be able to really start grooming the terrain. It does look like we're going to see more as the storm door opens up into next week," Cooper forecast.
Cooper noted that folks heading to Tahoe this weekend need to take care because chain requirements likely will be in effect. "Definitely plan before you come up here, have that emergency road kit in your car and just be ready for some delays," he advised.
Aside from skiing and snowboarding, the coming weather will also be a good time for snowshoeing and snowmobiling thanks to the low snow levels.
In the Bay Area, temperatures have been plunging overnight, causing multiple counties to open warming centers for those in need.
Weather during the day has stayed in the 50s across the region. The National Weather Service forecast rain to hit the Bay Area and Central Coast Thursday morning. Friday will be dry and cold before more showers this weekend.
