Sunnyvale mayor eats, reviews his way through stay-at-home orders

A Bay Area mayor has taken takeout and living local to a whole new level during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

For Sunnyvale's Larry Klein, it started on day one of the lockdown and hasn’t stopped. He's ordered over 175 meals, nearly all of them takeout.

"The first day of shelter-in-place for Santa Clara County was, of course, St. Patrick’s Day, and so Sunnyvale was founded by Martin Murphy, Jr. and has a big Irish pubs and Irish contingent on our historic Murphy Ave."

Klein has documented his dining experiences. complete with a full list of reviews. "I’m also encouraged to hear more people are 'following in the Mayor’s footsteps' to frequent the path of restaurants that I’ve highlighted," Klein wrote.

He’s discovered some real gems.

“Indian, Pakistani to Nepalese and Mexican and Filipino," the mayor said.

It is, he told KCBS Radio, a mayor’s job to support and promote local dining and local shopping. It’s not all eating for Klein during the stay-at-home order.

Klein, who runs every day with his dog buddy, has lost 20 pounds.
