Stanford Health Care announced Tuesday it's been forced to cancel thousands of first-dose COVID-19 vaccine appointments due to a reduction in available doses.

Santa Clara and Alameda counties will be receiving a fraction of their anticipated vaccine shipment, resulting in a shortage of the supply allocated to Stanford.

As a result, Stanford canceled about 5,500 first-dose appointments in Santa Clara County and approximately 1,200 first-dose appointments in Alameda County planned for this week and next.

"Stanford Health Care remains committed to vaccinating as many eligible community members as quickly as possible, and we continue to strive to fulfill our highest capacity when vaccine supplies allow it," a statement to KCBS Radio said.

Given the full amount of doses, officials said they can vaccinate up to 10,000 people per day.

Anyone impacted will be contacted for a rescheduled appointment.
