16-year-old Marcella Garcia was found dead on March 17 in the St. Anton apartment building in Sacramento, KTVU reported. A friend of Garcia told KTVU that she had been shot in the head but police have not confirmed that.

Oakland police told the news station, that they got a missing person report for Garcia on March 15. After hearing the news, the Oakland Police Department sent a victim liaison to Castlemont High School to provide students with support regarding their peers' death.

"The fact that she passed the way she did is another tragic example of our country's scourge of gun violence, which must come to an end. The Castlemont family will miss Marcella, and our hearts go out to her friends and family," the Oakland Unified School District said in a statement to the news station.

Her friend told KTVU that she had moved to Oakland to go to school. Garcia had been a foster child in both cities and her friends said she was hanging out with the wrong crowd but she was trying to get on the right track, the station reported.

Sacramento police told KTVU that her death is still under investigation.
