Teenager arrested in fatal Brentwood fitness center shooting

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – A 17-year-old was arrested on Thursday by Brentwood Police for his involvement in a fatal shooting at a local fitness center that resulted in one death.

Just before 2 a.m. Thursday Brentwood officers responded to a report of a shooting at a 24 Hour Fitness at 5961 Lone Tree Way.

Once on the scene, officers found one victim lying on a sidewalk in front of the fitness center with at least one gunshot wound. Despite medical intervention, the victim, later identified as 21-year-old Antioch resident Cesar Arana, died on the scene.

According to a release issued by the police, the altercation began inside the fitness center, on or around the basketball courts, and eventually continued in the parking lot out front.

It was there the situation escalated. Surveillance footage showed at least two people with guns fired multiple shots, striking four, and killing Arana.

This was an isolated incident with no apparent threat to public safety. The exact motive is still unknown.

Two suspects initially were detained but one was released when it was determined they were not one of the shooters. The other, a 17-year-old Brentwood resident, has been booked into the Contra Costa County Juvenile Detention Center for murder.

His identity has not been made public as he is a minor.
