In Occidental just outside of Sebastopol, a two-year-old boy died after being pinned under a falling tree that had crashed through the living room of the home. "They did everything possible, rendered aid to the toddler, and that still was not able to bring him back," Juan Valencia with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office told KCBS Radio.
First responders were busy throughout the chaotic night, as the storm downed trees and powerlines on many of the rural roads in western Sonoma County.
"When you throw in heavy winds, rains, debris on the roadway, it makes it challenging when you're responding to an emergency situation to really be diligent about approaching that scene and making sure you don't have power lines down," Valencia said.
Classes at more than a dozen western Sonoma County schools are canceled Thursday. Officials warned that it's just the beginning for the Russian River community. An evacuation warning has been issued for the low-lying areas along the river from Healdsburg to Jenner.
Cindy Foreman with the Sonoma County Fire District said those evacuation areas will likely be elevated as the waters rise. "This is going to be a long few days for not just our residents, but certainly our first responders and our dispatchers," she said.
