Two arrested in attempted murder of CHP officers

Oakland Police have arrested two men in connection with the attempted murder of two California Highway Patrol officers earlier this week.

Police said the suspects were taken into custody in conjunction with Hayward Police late Tuesday in the 400 block of Rousseau St. in Hayward.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Police said the arrests stem from an incident early Tuesday when two CHP officers tried to stop a car going upwards of 100 MPH eastbound on I-580. After exiting at the 98th Ave. ramp, the officers reported someone in the vehicle shot at them during the pursuit.

They didn’t return fire and eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

No one was hurt.

"These officers and our community were put in great peril and we appreciate the important information we received from our community which led to the arrest of these two extremely dangerous individuals. We are thankful that no one was injured and greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication of the men and women who risk their lives to keep our community safe," Interim Oakland Police Chief Susan Manheimer said.

The vehicle was later found abandoned. Witnesses told investigators that three people fled the scene after crashing into a parked car.

The case has been referred to the Alameda County District Attorney for charges.

The incident remains under investigation.
