In a tweet at 9:30 a.m., Cal police issued a WarnMe, instructing that everyone go inside and move away from doors and windows. "Campus police are investigating a credible campus-wide threat," officials wrote.
Those on campus are now instructed to leave in a safe and orderly way via the closest available route. Police determined based upon an investigation that it is appropriate to end the shelter in place.
According to authorities, there was no active shooter on campus. Police were looking for a person who may want to harm specific individuals, however, no arrests have been made. An official on the scene told KTVU station that the threats were made in an email.
School spokesman Dan Mogulof said those not on campus were urged to stay away.
All in-person classes are canceled through the remainder of the day and all campus services including libraries, dining and parking garages are closed until further notice. Instructors are encouraged to accommodate students and if possible record their remote classes to provide access to students at a later time.
The Berkeley Police Department told KCBS Radio that the emergency had nothing to do with the city of Berkeley, only the college campus.
Students and faculty were asked to tune into WarnMe, KALX 90.7 FM and news.berkeley.edu for updates. KCBS Radio has reached out to UC Berkeley media, but has not yet heard back.
It was not immediately clear what the emergency or threat was.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
