Tryouts for all sports are on pause in the Berkeley Unified School District as officials have confirmed three cases of COVID-19 linked to "several unmasked" boys’ basketball workouts.

The cases at Berkeley High School mark the first outbreak of the virus in the district and the first outbreak related to a BHS team. The city has asked BUSD to halt all sports tryouts for at least 48 hours as COVID-19 protocols are reviewed and put into place, if necessary.

"What happened during the basketball tryouts is not in keeping with the guidance from our Athletic Directors, who follow the guidance from both the California Department of Public Health and California Interscholastic Federation," BUSD officials said in a news release on Monday.

There were also non-school sanctioned indoor workouts "that involved some BHS basketball players" the week before the unmasked tryouts.

The district became aware of the first positive test for COVID-19 last Friday.

The second positive test came on Sunday, followed by a third positive test on Monday. All student athletes, coaches and other individuals present at the tryouts have been placed in a 10-day quarantine.

The pause in tryouts also impacts badminton, soccer, lacrosse, water polo, basketball, wrestling and volleyball.
