'We are genuinely saddened': Vandal tries to start fire at Oakland Asian American bakery

An Asian American bakery in Oakland is speaking out after an unidentified man allegedly set a fire at their facility in what they believe was "a crime against the Asian community."

According to an Instagram post from Bui Phong Bakery at 2800 International Blvd., the incident happened at 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Surveillance video showed the man biking to the back of the bakery, then ride off about a minute later before flames can be seen "growing bigger and bigger" from a recycling bin. One of the owners was at the bakery at the time and was able to put the fire out.

"We are Chinese AMERICANS, and in 1983 started a small family business and have been a proud part of the Oakland community for nearly 40 years," the post said. "We are genuinely saddened by everything happening to the AAPI community and never thought it would happen to us."

It’s not clear if the incident is under investigation.
