SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – KCBS Radio has a friend in need. Veteran reporter Mike Colgan, who retired a few years ago, is recovering from a life-changing accident.

On March 5, Mike was out for a walk with his wife when he lost his footing and fell forward with his hands in his pockets. The impact broke his neck. What started as a nice stroll ended with a major spine injury. Doctors attempted to relieve pressure on the spine, but as of now, Mike is a quadriplegic.
"As you can imagine he was in a pretty dark place after this accident, but his spirits have improved and I feel like I have seen a man reclaim ownership of his life, which is hugely encouraging," Mike's son told KCBS Radio.
Mike spent 33 years at KCBS Radio in San Francisco interviewing everyone from Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama to Henry Winkler. He traveled with the Raiders and was front and center for the Warriors sweep to an NBA title at the Cow Palace back in 1975.
After all that Mike has given to KCBS Radio and Bay Area news reporting at large, it is time for us to give back to him. Medical costs are staggering and to help a GoFundMe has been created.
"He's just thoughtful and sweet, yet he has this kind of gruff, tough exterior and I love that about him," said KCBS Radio reporter Jennifer Hodges. "I feel like he'd give you the shirt off his back if you asked him."
Mike is currently in a rehab facility, but time there is limited. Medical professionals are advising him to get health care, physical therapy and whatever equipment is necessary to make at-home life a possibility. Estimates of care are high and every dollar raised will go to that purpose.
Mike is a husband, father, grandfather and friend. Those who know him, love him.
"Anything anyone can do — I'll take positive energy, I'll take anything anyone can contribute to his recovery would be greatly appreciated," Mike's son said.
