New video has emerged showing the final seconds leading to a deadly officer-involved shooting in Danville last month.
The 45-second clip, obtained on Monday by the San Francisco Chronicle and KTVU, shows Danville Police Officer Andrew Hall shooting Tyrell Wilson, a homeless Black man who had reportedly been living near a public parking lot before the incident occurred on March 11.
According to a release later that day from the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, Danville Police were initially called to a report of someone throwing rocks from the Sycamore Valley Rd. overpass onto I-680. When officers arrived at Sycamore Valley Rd. and Camino Ramon, police said the suspect pulled a knife. As the officer approached the man and tried to speak with him, he allegedly pulled the knife, opened it and refused to drop it.
The close-range shooting happened because Wilson "advanced toward the officer," however, the short video didn't appear to show Wilson making a sudden move in Hall's direction.
Warning: The video below may be disturbing for some viewers.
Wilson was shot once. He died on March 17 at a local hospital.
Hall remains on administrative leave "and has requested a new assignment outside Danville," reported the paper. The incident is under investigation by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
The video "'tells nothing about what occurred there' because it is shaky and shot from an odd angle," Hall's attorney, Michael Rains, told the Chronicle.
The incident is Hall’s second deadly shooting as a Danville police officer.
The first happened in 2018.
Civil rights attorney John Burris, who represents Wilson’s family, called the video "startling." On Tuesday, Burris plans to announce the filing of a federal lawsuit against the City Of Danville alleging Wilson’s civil rights were violated.
