SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – As the California Primary Election kicks off Tuesday morning, ballot tracking data shows that a low percentage of residents have sent in their ballots ahead of time.

On Monday, only 14% of registered voters had returned their ballots, according to Political Data Inc., as first reported by KNTV.
21,941,212 eligible voters are registered in California. Those who are registered receive a mail-in ballot automatically, but may also vote at the polls on Election Day.
In San Francisco, a push to recall District Attorney Chesa Boudin is underway. According to city ethics commission data, Neighbors for a Better San Francisco Advocacy — a Marin County-based political action committee — is responsible for nearly two-thirds of all donations to groups seeking to recall Boudin.
Recall proponents cite concerns about crime in San Francisco as a reason to oust Boudin, who was elected district attorney in 2019. He previously faced a recall that failed to reach the ballot in 2021.
In Santa Clara County, voters will decide on a new San Jose sheriff for the first time in more than two decades, following Laurie Smith's decision to not run for a seventh term amid corruption charges. They will also decide on a new mayor as current Mayor Sam Liccardo is being termed out.
Those who win Tuesday's Primary Election will run in the general election on Nov. 8.
