SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Vice President Kamala Harris is back in the Bay Area for a two-day visit with events planned in San Francisco and Oakland, as the attention settles on reproductive rights ahead of the midterm elections.

The Vice President will be busy in the Bay Area, holding a round table with state leaders on Thursday to discuss reproductive healthcare and two events in Oakland on Friday where she will examine the commercial space sector and support for students.

KCBS Radio Political Analyst Marc Sandalow told KCBS Radio's Melissa Culross and Eric Thomas this issue is the ideal place for Harris to step in where President Joe Biden may falter.

"Biden, who is a devout catholic, has always been squishy on abortion, meaning that he is certainly opposed to abortion on a personal level," Sandalow said. "He even has trouble using the word abortion. He certainly supports a woman's right to choose an abortion, but for Kamala Harris this is the kind of issue she can embrace because she has always been a full-throated reproductive rights figure."

Her visit comes on the heels of legislative victories for Democrats, including the passage of bipartisan bills in congress. Eric Jay, a San Francisco-based political consultant, told KCBS Radio Democrats are hoping to harness that moment as the midterms approach.

"A month can be a lifetime in this game and a month ago the Democrats were in very serious trouble, inflation was rising, the President's job rating was falling, the legislative agenda was floundering," he said.

Harris has held similar events on reproductive rights across the country. In the wake of Kansas voters rejecting an abortion ban, the Vice President will be a key voice on the issue for the administration, Jay said, echoing Sandalow's words.

"She's going to be barnstorming the country, carrying the administration's message, not just on deficit reduction, but politically front and center will be the administration's message on preserving reproductive freedom," Jay said.

Harris is expected in San Francisco around noon.
