In an effort to combat spread, crews plan to treat the areas of West Middlefield Rd. and San Antonio Rd. using truck-mounted equipment this Friday beginning at 10 p.m. The treatment poses no risk to people or pets, Santa Clara County officials cautioned.

West Nile virus was first detected in California in 2003.

Since then, 339 Californians have died from complications related to the virus out of 7,360 confirmed cases. Just one person died from West Nile virus statewide last year.

Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and possibly "significant neurological damage or death," according to health officials.
