There are plenty of ways across the Bay Area to celebrate marijuana's unofficial holiday on Wednesday — from large-scale festivals to more mellow functions.

As always, the region’s "4/20" celebrations are highlighted by San Francisco's "420 Hippie Hill" event, which usually draws thousands of people to Golden Gate Park for a day filled with entertainment, live comedy and music. This year's city-run event is free for everyone age 21 and older to attend and will allow on-site cannabis sales for the first in the festival's history.
East Bay residents who don't want to travel across the water have their own party they can attend. Oakland is hosting a huge outdoor festival at Liberation Park from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event features 65 vendors and a plethora of activities including a skating rink and "puff and paint" sessions.

There are also other DJ parties and comedy shows in the evening throughout the region.
For those looking for something more low-key, San Francisco's Balboa Theatre has its annual screening of "The Big Lebowski" at 4:20 p.m.
"It's perfect if 4/20 is a holiday that you want to participate in but you’re not looking to dive head long into," theater operator Adam Bergeron told KCBS Radio.
The film features Jeff Bridges’ iconic "the Dude" character, who Bergeron said is "the quintessential stoner, do-gooder, happen-stance, hero."
Bergeron said the theater has shown the hit movie on 4/20 on the holiday ever since the theater’s general manager thought of the idea five years ago.
"It just seems like it’s kind of peanut butter and jelly. This movie and 4/20, it’s perfect," he said.
In addition, many cannabis vendors in the Bay Area are offering deep discounts for the holiday, including San Francisco's "Pipeline Cannabis Dispensaries."
"It's really kind of a give back to our customer base and the guests that come into our store on a regular basis," store cofounder Jesse Henry told KCBS Radio. "But it's also a way to offer back into the industry."
