The average price for a gallon of regular gas in California is now $5.92, setting a new record according to AAA. But in the Bay Area prices are even higher, remaining above $6.00 at some gas stations.

Severin Bornstein, Director of the Energy Institute at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, told KCBS Radio California's effort to be climate conscious is why gas prices are still high. He explained there are a limited number of refineries that can make California's environmentally friendly blend of gas.

"Whether it's winter blend or summer blend, we are still going to have this concern of the capacity to make our different blend than the rest of the country," Bornstein said.

Due to the steadfast prices, commuters are suffering. "With the inflation it seems like everything's going up," John Weaver told KCBS Radio. He drives a work vehicle during his commute, but also has a truck at home. "It does get a little pricey," he said.

The national average for gasoline is now $4.24, down a penny from a week ago.
