The mayor of the Sonoma County town of Windsor resigned Friday, effective immediately.
In a statement released through his attorney, Dominic Foppoli says he is stepping down after a woman in Florida has now accused him of sexual assault in March of this year.
Foppoli faced a recall effort after the San Francisco Chronicle first reported several women's allegations of sexual assault last month.
The Florida woman is now the seventh woman to come forward and accuse Foppoli of assault, including a member of the Windsor Town Council, with one woman accusing him of rape.
Foppoli has vehemently denied the allegations and insisted that an investigation by the California Attorney General's Office would prove his innocence, even as he was ousted from other roles and fired from a position at a winery owned by his family.
In his statement, Foppoli writes, "It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning today, effective immediately. I have always and will always maintain that I did not engage in any non-consensual sexual acts with any woman."
“To the residents of Windsor, I do not want undue national attention to have a negative impact on the Windsor community because of lawful but poor choices I have made in the recent past.”
He goes on to say that he has "no doubt" that the woman in Palm Beach is attempting to "leverage the situation to her advantage."
At a marathon town council meeting last month, other city officials and dozens of residents pleaded with the mayor to resign, but he refused at that time to step down.
