Almost a year after the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, a poll has found that most Americans feel it was an attack on democracy and blame former President Donald Trump for playing some role in the attacks.
The ABC/Ipsos poll found that 72% of Americans believe that those involved in the attack were "threatening democracy" while they tried to stop the certification of the 2020 election results.
Meanwhile, 25% of Americans believe the individuals at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, were "protecting democracy."
How Americans view the events of Jan. 6 largely depends on what party they identify with. The poll found partisan splits have hardened, with Republicans still largely backing Trump's version of events.
Democrats are nearly unanimous, with 96% believing the attacks were a threat to democracy.
Republicans are split on their thoughts of the attack, with 45% saying it was a threat and 52% thinking those involved in the riot were "protecting democracy."
When it comes to former President Trump's role in the attack, 91% of Democrats think that he bears either "a great deal" or "a good amount" of responsibility for it. For Republicans, 78% believe that the president bears "just some" or no responsibility for the insurrection.
Altogether, 58% of Americans think Trump bears a "great deal" or a "good amount" of responsibility for what happened at the Capitol.
Polls taken in the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6 events show that Americans have not changed their minds much, ABC News reported.
A poll from Jan. 13, 2021, found that 57% of Americans thought the former president was responsible.
Since the election, former President Trump has claimed that there were mass amounts of voter fraud and the election was stolen from him.
However, most Americans don't believe this to be true, with 65% saying they believe Biden's victory was legitimate, according to the poll.
It also found that nearly all Democrats believe so, too, with 93% saying it was legitimate while most Republicans do not. Of those polled, 71% sided with Trump's claim that he was the rightful winner.
The poll comes just after the House Committee investigating the insurrection announced it will release its findings after interviewing more than 300 witnesses and collecting tens of thousands of documents for six months, the Associated Press reported.
The information is set to come out in the coming months, with members of the panel starting to reveal what they have found.
