Masks and annual coronavirus vaccinations could be the new normal in the U.S., even after the pandemic is over, according to the nation’s chief medical advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Will Americans be getting COVID-19 shots just like flu shots?
Fauci said they still don't know how long the coronavirus vaccines will continue to protect people from the virus.
“I hope it’s a considerable period of time, but we don’t know that as a fact right now,” he said. “We’re going to have to work that out and observe over a period of a few years, if not longer.”
The doctor said updated vaccines may be able to keep up with the evolution of the virus.
Speaking to American Muslim Health Professionals, Fauci - President Biden's chief medical advisor - said it's also likely that Americans will be wearing masks for a considerable period of time.
He said face coverings may become accepted in the U.S. the way they are in some Asian countries.
“[People] wear [masks] sometimes when they’re out or when they’re not feeling well,” Fauci added. “They feel there’s a lot of viral illness in the community, and they wear masks. That very well may be the case.”
