As more restrictions are lifted, doctors are reminding parents of the importance of getting eligible children vaccinated. Key COVID-19 numbers have come way down since the height of the omicron surge but the pandemic hasn't gone away.

While vaccination rates in the Bay Area are high, they're lagging among the younger kids who are eligible.

Dr. Ann Petru is Director of Infectious Diseases at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland. "I think we need to remember that kids are not uniquely protected from COVID," she said. "We have had five kids die at our hospital with COVID infections, including a child as young as four weeks old."

Petru told KCBS Radio's "As Prescribed" on Thursday that other children have conditions that put them at increased risk.

"I'm shocked at how many people are not aware that morbid obesity is such a risk," she added. "I mean these teenage kids who weigh 200, 300, 400 pounds. Those kids we need to protect...and the family members need to be vaccinated as well as the kids."
