House Speaker and San Francisco Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was roundly criticized by Republicans, and even some Democrats, after voicing support for President Joe Biden following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.

Violence and chaos has erupted in the country amid the Taliban seizing power, two weeks before the U.S. planned to completely withdraw its troops from the region. The Biden administration has been harshly scrutinized for how it's handled the situation.

"The President is to be commended for the clarity of purpose of his statement on Afghanistan and his action," Pelosi said in a statement Sunday morning. "The Taliban must know the world is watching its actions. We are concerned about reports regarding the Taliban’s brutal treatment of all Afghans, especially women and girls."

"Once again, I want to acknowledge the clarity of purpose of President Biden’s statement and the wisdom of his actions," she concluded.

A firestorm of criticism from conservatives quickly reigned down on the Speaker's for her defense of the President.

While not close to the same amount of outrage, some Democrats also denounced Pelosi's remarks.

President Biden plans to address the nation on Monday afternoon for the first time since the Taliban takeover.
