After a man stole an airplane and threatened to crash it into a Mississippi Walmart, authorities eventually were able to bring the incident “to a safe conclusion,” and arrest the man.

Authorities identified Cory Patterson, 29, as the thief. At approximately 10:15 a.m. Saturday police took him into custody.

Tupelo police were first notified that Patterson had commandeered the plane at around 5 a.m. At one point, Patterson threatened to “intentionally crash into [Walmart] on West Main.”

Police worked to evacuate the store and talking directly with Patterson.

Around two hours before Patterson’s arrest, he was reported to be flying a King Air plane north of Tupelo. State, local and federal authorities were all monitoring the situation.

“I would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the citizens, emergency service providers and agencies,” said Tupelo Police Department Chief John Quaka and Deputy Chief Anthony Hill Saturday.
