Dr. Aric Prather, a renowned sleep scientist at UCSF, has published a book — "The Sleep Prescription: Seven Days to Unlocking Your Best Rest" — that offers techniques to get better sleep in just one week.
"Sleep is something that I like to think of as the glue that holds our lives together," Prather told KCBS Radio's "As Prescribed." "We know from so much research that when people get insufficient amounts of sleep, they don't get the sleep they need, they're at risk for a whole host of different things."
Getting a good night's rest is as vital to our health as food, water and oxygen. At different ages and stages in life, people need different amounts of sleep.
"Sleep changes as we age," he explained. "As we get older our sleep gets a little bit lighter, a little bit more fragmented, but that doesn't mean that there aren't sleep problems that we can address, which is the type of things that we talk about in this book."
In his book, Prather lays out a variety of steps that are distilled from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, helping those who suffer to get back on track to a reliable, fulfilling sleep cycle.
