SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – If Roe v. Wade is overturned, there could be wide-ranging effects on the doctors who are training to be the next generation of specialists in pregnancy care.

For doctors doing their residencies in obstetrics and gynecology, abortion training is part of the program – teaching skills that are applied beyond just performing abortions.

"Early pregnancy loss, we commonly call it miscarriage, is also so common and getting trained in abortion care gives graduating residents the skills they need to also provide pregnancy loss care," said Dr. Jody Steinauer is Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF.

Steinauer, who's also the director of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, was a guest on KCBS Radio's "As Prescribed" on Thursday.

She's senior author of a study that found almost half of OB/GYN residency programs are in states that are certain or likely to ban abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned, meaning thousands of residents could miss out on essential abortion training.

"(So) I'm very worried that if we do not manage to make sure that all of these residents are trained, we will see long-term impacts on the care provided in emergencies, in miscarriage or pregnancy loss, and also in abortion care," Steinauer added.
