LaQuedra Edwards was annoyed.
After feeding $40 into a lottery vending machine at a Vons Supermarket in Tarzana, Calif., she got bumped into by “some rude person,” according to a statement released by the California State Lottery – a nudge that caused her to hit the wrong button. As a result, instead of a cheaper ticket, she spent three-quarters of her lottery allowance on one $30 ticket.
Edwards said the person who bumped into her “didn’t say a thing and just walked out the door.”
She brought the unwanted ticket out to her car and scratched it off, then got the surprise of her life.
The ticket won her $10 million.
“I didn’t really believe it at first,” Edwards said. After driving off, “I pulled over, looked at it again and again, scanned it with my [California Lottery mobile] app, and I just kept thinking this can’t be right.”
The odds of winning $10 million, the top prize available, in the 200X Scratchers game are miniscule – 1 in over 3 million, according to state lottery statistics.
“I’m still in shock,” she told officials. “All I remember saying once I found out how much I just won was, ‘I’m rich!’” said Edwards, who plans to spend part of her winnings on a house and start a nonprofit organization.
