
The United States will partner with the European Union to promote trade, travel, and technology, according to officials who spoke with Politico.
President Joe Biden will meet with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in England Thursday ahead of the G-7 summit that kicks off Friday. The meeting mirrors the “Atlantic Charter” statement issued by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the end of World War II.
The 2021 version of the charter will combine resources from across the pond to tackle challenges including global defense, coronavirus recovery, and reversing climate change.
The standout technology provision will remove barriers allowing American and British tech companies to work better together. The landmark technology pact could gain approval in 2022.
In a statement Wednesday, the U.K. described the 1941 agreement as “one of the greatest triumphs of U.K. and U.S. relations” that did more than any other agreement to shape the world order. The British government pointed to the creation of the U.N. and NATO as two of its most lasting accomplishments.
“80 years ago, the U.S. President and British Prime Minister stood together promising a better future,” said Prime Minister Johnson, describing the allies’ relationship as crucial for world stability. “Today, we do the same.”
