Amid dry brush and steady winds, the fire has spread rapidly, growing to 2,800 acres with 0% containment in less than one day.

20 mile per hour winds have driven the flames toward the town of Big Pine, fire officials said, prompting an evacuation order for Big Pine east of Highway 395, White Mountain Research Center and Owens Valley (Caltech) Radio Observatory.

Warm Springs Road and Highway 168 east of Highway 395 have also been closed due to the blaze. An evacuation center is located at Bishop Senior Center on 682 Spruce St.
