SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Officials at Yosemite National Park are asking for the public's help after a hiking trail at the top of historic Yosemite Falls was vandalized last month.

The incident happened on May 20, authorities said.

"This is certainly not acceptable," Yosemite National Park Spokesperson Scott Gediman told KCBS Radio on Sunday.

After receiving "multiple reports" of vandalism along the Yosemite Falls Trail, park rangers "set up a trail block and identified potential suspects." The next day, about 30 sites of spray painted "white and blue graffiti" were identified – the largest of which was "eight feet by eight feet."

"I think everyone would agree that this type of act is unconscionable," Gediman said. "How anyone could come into a beautiful park like this...and do this kind of thing is just not acceptable." It's not known if officials are looking for one person or multiple suspects, he added.

Authorities are looking for any hikers that were on the Yosemite Falls Trail between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on May 20, particularly those who "saw individuals carrying cans of spray paint, engaging in tagging, or have video or photographic evidence."

Defacing a national treasure like Yosemite is a federal crime.
