Bay Area schools are facing a dire teacher shortage.
California has always needed more teachers, but according to the California School Board Association, with the pandemic in its second year, the issue is becoming even more intense.

“It’s sort of a proposed storm of a long-term problem that’s been complicated by the pandemic and then our efforts to try and address the pandemic are ones that require even more staffing than we needed before,” said Troy Flint, a spokesperson for the CSBA.
For many teachers, coronavirus has inspired an early retirement, caused them to relocate to another state or change career paths altogether. “The pandemic didn’t create these issues, it only increased or rebuilt them, and that’s what we’re seeing with the teacher shortage,” Flint said.
The shortage is hitting certain subjects that have always been tough to fill especially hard including special education, mathematics, science and bilingual education.
