Angelotta went missing on Dec. 25 amid a torrential winter storm that caused whiteout conditions, subfreezing temperatures and dumped over seven feet of snow on the Lake Tahoe area.

His body was found half a mile from a residential neighborhood near Schaffer Mill Creek, miles from where search teams were initially looking for him. "Due to the considerable distance Angelotta had travelled from the resort, it was not included in the original emergency search efforts," officials said.

Police believe it is possible that Angelotta was attempting to find the neighborhood near Truckee when he succumbed to the elements.

The sheriff's office also shared a statement from Angelotta's family thanking search-and-rescue teams for their efforts.

"The Angelotta family is deeply touched by the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and support during this extremely difficult time and personally wants to thank everyone that accompanied in the search and assisted them during these last two weeks," the family said.

Placer County police offered the family their condolences and hope "this will provide them closure to this tragic event."
