High school sports teams will no longer be limited to competing only with teams in their county or neighboring counties.

The California Department of Public Health updated its guidelines on youth sports on Tuesday to lift the restriction on cross-county games. Teams can now compete against any other team in the state.

The rule had complicated matters for leagues that spanned multiple counties.

And with restrictions lifting around sporting venues and theaters, changes are coming to the rules for having parents and spectators in the stands for youth sports as well.

Public health officials have now clarified that the same guidelines around attending an outdoor performance or indoor concert will apply to youth sports.

For outdoor sports, that means counties in the purple tier can have up to 100 people, 20% capacity in the red tier and 33% in the orange tier.

Audiences for indoor sports are currently strictly limited to immediate household members only, but that will soon change when the new indoor events guidelines kick in.

Starting Apr. 15, venues that can fit a maximum of 1,500 people can have 10% capacity in the red tier, increasing to 25% if all guests show proof of vaccination or a negative test. Those limits go up to 15-35% in the orange tier.
