SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Under a new proposal, California taxpayers would help to pay for abortions for women who can't afford them, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday.

The proposal comes in preparation for the influx of people seeking reproductive care in California in the case that the U.S. Supreme Court officially votes to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Out of pocket, an abortion can cost up to a few thousand dollars in California.

"California will not stand idly by as extremists roll back our basic constitutional rights; we're going to fight like hell, making sure that all women – not just those in California – know that this state continues to recognize and protect their fundamental rights," Newsom said in a news release.

The Reproductive Health Package will dedicate $40 million of $125 million in funding for grants to reproductive health care providers to offset the cost of abortion for those who do not have health care to cover it.

"We're expanding access to these critical services, welcoming businesses and their employees fleeing anti-abortion states and reaffirming our commitment to continuing to work closely with the Legislature and reproductive rights stakeholders to further solidify California's leadership on abortion rights," the governor explained.

As part of the package, Newsom also proposed that California create incentive opportunities for businesses to relocate here from states with anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ laws.
