Most of California’s masking requirements will end as the state hits its planned reopening and lifts coronavirus-related restrictions on June 15.

The governor made the comments on Tuesday in an interview with KTTV.

Masks will continue to be required "only in those settings that are indoor, only in those massively large settings where people around the world not just around the country are convening and where people are mixing in real dense spaces," Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

"Otherwise, guidance, recommendations but no mandates and no mandates, no restrictions on businesses large and small," he added.

As of now, California Department of Public Health guidelines require masking in "indoor settings outside of one’s home" like public transportation.

For unvaccinated Californians, masks "are required outdoors any time physical distancing cannot be maintained, including when attending crowded outdoor events, such as live performances, parades, fairs, festivals, sports events, or other similar settings." In those cases a person is fully vaccinated, masking is not required outside unless attending crowded outdoor events like live performances and parades, among other similar situations.

Last month, the state followed guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in adopting looser requirements around face masks.

The state’s color-coded tier system will be eliminated in mid-June, pending COVID-19 vaccine supply and hospitalization rates staying "stable and low."
