FORTUNA, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – The cleanup continues in Humboldt County following yesterday morning's 6.4 earthquake.

Large earthquakes are relatively common in Humboldt County. "I mean earthquakes don't really scare me," one woman told KCBS Radio. But residents find they never get used to the destruction that follows.

Beverage Plus, a family-owned liquor store in Fortuna, has been left in disarray after the quake. The damage is particularly evident inside the store, where bottles of wine and spirits were flung from the shelves and glass litters the floor.

"When one happens that's big like that, it scares you," said Judy Luna, assistant manager at Beverage Plus. "I think everybody's very unnerved now, like I'm afraid we're going to have another one."

Luna and other members of the Beverage Plus team are trying to get the store back on its feet. "You have to get back to business," she said. "It's the week before Christmas, it's a terrible week for businesses to have to be closed, especially locally owned businesses."

Luna believes the liquor store lost an estimated $20,000 to $30,000 in alcohol. However, the damage could've been much worse if they hadn't recently installed wires that run across the middle of each bottle on the shelf to hold them in. "If that wire wasn't in we would've lost a lot more. I don't know how much would have been left on the shelves," Luna said.

17 people were injured in the quake, and two people died from medical emergencies. 70,000 people lost power, but crews hope to have every household fully restored by 3 p.m. Wednesday.
