Robert Carey Jr. of Calimsea, Calif. was "an experienced hiker," according to his family.

The 33-year-old Carey Jr. went missing late Saturday following a planned hike at San Gorgonio Peak. Yucaipa police – who took his family's initial call when he didn't return from the hike – said witnesses later reported "an unknown subject yelling for help" in the same area.

Carey Jr.'s body was located at the base of the Big Falls Waterfall during a search, but a rescue team wasn't able to retrieve him until daylight hours.

It was determined he succumbed to his injuries after the fall.

Carey Jr.'s mother, Bonnie Phillips, shared her final texts with her son: "He said: 'When you wake up, go out and look at the tallest mountain you see out there. And I'll be up there. Wish me luck,'" she told NBC. "He was adamant that he was going to make it to the top of that mountain. And he did."

San Gorgonio Mountain is the highest peak in Southern California at roughly 11,500 feet.
