Gov. Gavin Newsom is calling out those criticizing his decisions in a recent family masking incident.
In a statement, Newsom responded to a controversy earlier in the week when photos surfaced of his son maskless at camp. The statement said that the family had missed an email from the camp saying they would not be enforcing masking, and pulled their children out of the program.
Conservatives and members of the public were in an uproar when the photos came out. Critics and supporters of a recall were quick to question the governor’s decision to let his children attend the basketball camp, indoors and maskless.
While doing a walkthrough of wildfire-ravaged areas in the state with Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak Wednesday, Newsom fired back.
In an interview with CBS News urging for federal wildfire aid, the conversation turned toward the recent controversy.
"My son went to camp with his mask on and took it off for a photo, had it in his hand," said Newsom. "You want to attack me? Attack me. Don’t attack my son."
"They’re attacking and weaponizing my son," added Newsom, of watching network news coverage of the situation. "He was sitting there crying with me last night."
