Have we already reached peak California recall?
Republican John Cox is taking his "Meet the Beast Bus Tour" to six California cities over three days promoting his candidacy to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in this fall’s gubernatorial recall election.
But it’s not who will be in tow that’s grabbing attention.
It’s what will be there.
Cox, who lost to Gov. Newsom by 24 points in the general election three years ago, will appear alongside a so-called "special guest" at Sacramento’s Miller Regional Park on Tuesday: a 1,000-pound live bear.
It's not clear what kind of bear this will be.
Cox's campaign has tacked a bear onto its logo and appears to have quietly changed the candidate's Twitter handle to @BeastJohnCox.

That’s followed by a stop at The French Laundry in Yountville, site of the governor’s ill-advised attendance at a long-time colleague’s birthday party in violation of his own COVID-19 guidelines.
The bear won’t make an appearance at the Wine Country event.
KCBS Radio has reached out to the Cox campaign for comment but has not yet heard back.
